Workplace Professionalism.
As a manager, it is your responsibility to create a positive and safe work environment for your team. It’s easy to get carried away in conversations or cross boundaries that can be difficult to recover from, potentially leading to corrective action. To help maintain professionalism, please follow these best practices:
- Avoid comments about physical appearance: Aside from uniform policies, do not make remarks about anyone’s looks, body type, or anything of that nature.
- No unsolicited nicknames or “pet names”: Only use nicknames if the employee has explicitly approved them.
- Refrain from salary discussions: Discussing salaries with other employees is a fireable offense. While earned commissions are public knowledge and can be discussed, hourly wages, salaries, and similar topics are off-limits.
- Follow corrective action procedures: Avoid threatening employees with job loss. Stick to the corrective action guidelines provided by HR.
- Doctor’s notes: A doctor’s note cannot be requested until the third consecutive day of calling out sick. After the third day, a note is required to return to work and should be submitted to HR and your direct manager.
- Protect employee privacy: Do not share personal information about employees with others. This includes reasons for PTO, illnesses, performance, or any corrective actions they may be undergoing.
- Treat all employees equally: Do not treat men and women differently in the workplace. Avoid assumptions about job performance or responses based on gender. Additionally, do not treat employees differently based on their age—whether they are very young or older, all employees should be treated with the same level of respect and fairness.
- Avoid sensitive topics: Keep discussions about politics, religion, and personal beliefs out of the workplace and stores.
- Use of profanity: As adults we use profanity, ensure it is never directed at employees or coworkers. Refrain from using profanity in stores or showrooms.
- Be mindful of personal time with employees: While spending time with employees outside of work is not prohibited, remember that as a manager, you set an example. Be responsible when it comes to after-work activities such as drinking or driving.
